How It Works: Getting Cash Back From Merchants
When you're making your purchase, ask if the store offers cash back. Many do, especially grocery stores and drug stores. If they do, to request cash after making a purchase, simply press debit instead of credit on their machine. Then, enter your PIN and select the amount of cash that you want to complete the transaction. The cashier will hand you the money and it will simply be added onto the cost of your purchase. It’s that easy!

What is a chip card?
Chip cards are regular plastic credit or debit cards with an embedded microchip. The chip protects in-store payments because it generates a unique, one-time code that is needed for each transaction to be approved. A chip card also has a magnetic stripe on the back of the card.
Do I need to use a PIN with my chip card?
Just like you do today, you’ll have the option to either sign or enter your PIN for debit purchases.
Can I use my chip card for all the same things as my old card?
Yes, you can still make purchases as you always have — by entering the card number online or swiping your card at merchant locations that do not yet have chip readers. You can also continue to use your card at ATMs.
Where can I use my chip card?
You can use your chip card anywhere Visa cards are accepted. You can swipe your card just like you do today using the magnetic stripe on the back of the card, if a chip-activated terminal is not yet available. The terminal or the cashier will prompt you to insert and leave the card in the terminal until the transaction is complete if it’s activated for chip.
Can I use a chip card at merchant that hasn’t yet updated their terminal?
Yes, just swipe your card using the magnetic stripe the way you always have. You’re still protected from unauthorized transactions with our Zero Liability Policy*.
What if my chip card doesn’t work when I insert it into the chip terminal?
Some merchants may have chip terminals, but they may not yet be activated to accept chip cards. If you are unable to insert your chip card into a chip terminal, you can always swipe your card to complete the transaction. Most often, merchants that haven’t activated their terminals will block the chip slot.
Why does my chip credit card work at the chip terminal but my chip debit card does not?
Until the technology is available everywhere, chip card acceptance may vary by type of payment card at some merchants. During this transition, you can always swipe your card to complete the purchase. And rest assured, you’re protected with our Zero Liability Policy.
How will I know whether to swipe my card or insert it?
Your card will always work either by swipe or insertion. The terminal or the cashier will prompt you to insert the card into the terminal if it’s activated for chip technology. If the terminal is not yet chip-activated, you can always swipe your card to complete the purchase.
Are chip cards more secure than magnetic stripe cards?
All Visa cards offer protection from unauthorized use of your card or account information. Chip technology offers another layer of security when used at a chip-activated terminal, because it generates a unique, one-time code that is needed for each transaction to be approved.
What do I do if my chip card is lost or stolen?
One of two options can be pursued if your card is lost or stolen:
- Contact an ExpressBanker at (844) 517-3308 to report your card lost or stolen and request a replacement card. Your card comes with zero liability protection, so you won’t be liable for any unauthorized transactions you report in a timeline manner.
- Send us a secure message in Online or Mobile Banking.
Do I need to notify the bank before I use my debit or ATM card while travelling in another state or foreign country?
Yes. To help prevent an interruption in debit or ATM card access while travelling domestically or internationally, we recommend you submit a travel notification 48 hours in advance of your trip, for the cards you plan to use while traveling. You can submit a travel notification using Online Banking or the Mobile app. Just log into your account and select Add Travel Notification to tell us your travel plans. Alternatively, you can also call ExpressBank at (844) 517-3308.
Will I be notified when my travel notification request has been processed?
Yes. We will send an email to your primary email address on file to notify you when your request has been processed.
Can I cancel or edit a travel notification once it has been processed?
You may cancel a travel notification as long as the date of travel has not passed. Travel notifications cannot be edited once they have been processed. If you need to make a change to your travel notification, please cancel your original request and submit a new travel notification with your updated travel details.
